Founded in 1928 to allow the many highland folks who worked in the 'big houses' of Skelmorlie and Wemyss Bay to get together socially. It is one of the oldest groups in the area.
During the early years, ceilidhs, dances, concerts and Burns Suppers were regular items on the syllabus as they still are today. Our programme of events has not remained static and an annual August bus outing to some of Scotlands most scenic places is a popular event.
We also hold a Quiz each February which, like the rest of the Highlanders activities has contributed to many charities over the years. In fact The Highlanders has been able to donate at least £1200 annually to charity.
Our Burns Suppers attempt to stimulate interest by breaking with tradition and have successfully been a sell-out for many years.
It is definitely not compulsory to be a teuchter to enjoy an evening at The Highlanders. We hope that the support we have had for 88 years will continue and so allow the Association to celebrate its centenary !
